# Maya Pejić (1935-2023) > Maya Pejić was a Dutch documentary photographer. She was born in The Hague on 22 February 1935 and died in 2023. For more than forty years she photographed people at the edges of society: minorities, migrants, women and children, in the Netherlands and in dozens of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Much of her travel work was done for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Development Cooperation). Her archive of more than 220,000 negatives, slides and prints is kept by the International Institute of Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam. Her work is also held by the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Amsterdam City Archives and the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Her children appear in her own photographs, which are part of her archive at the IISG. ## Life and work ### Early career (1960s) In the 1960s Maya Pejić worked as a photographer for NRC Handelsblad, HP/De Tijd and Viva. In 1963 she and her husband at the time published the book "De bevalling. Het wonder der geboorte" (Childbirth. The Miracle of Birth), published by L. Stafleu & Zoon in Leiden. The book showed every stage of childbirth in black-and-white photographs. At the time this was a bold subject that was rarely shown in public. ### Documentary work in Amsterdam (1970s) In the early 1970s she turned fully to documentary photography. In 1971-1972 the Amsterdam City Archives gave out its first documentary photo commission, "Amsterdam voor het voorbij is" (Amsterdam Before It Is Gone). Maya Pejić made it together with Willem Diepraam, Koen Wessing and Dolf Toussaint. She went on to make several series for the city archives about daily life in Amsterdam neighbourhoods and communities. ### Travels for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1975-2002) In 1975 the Dutch Ministry for Development Cooperation invited her to photograph women in Southeast Asia. This was the first of many trips. In the same year she photographed Cuba (Havana, Alamar and other places: streets, schools, farming, women and children). Her travel report from Cuba, made in a United Nations context, made her widely known. She worked for many years for "Troef", the magazine of the Development Cooperation information service of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also wrote and photographed for the magazine "Samsam". All photographs in the ministry's 1985 annual report on development cooperation are hers. She kept notebooks of her foreign trips, country by country, from 1975 to 2002. Countries she photographed include: - Africa: Congo (Kinshasa), Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Senegal - Asia: Burma (Myanmar), India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines - Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru - The Netherlands In Morocco she photographed girls working in the dye works, among strong smells and dangerous chemicals. She noticed that the children and the adults around them saw this work as normal, while in the West it is seen as shocking. Her photographs show both sides: hard work, but also pride and self-confidence. ### The Netherlands: minorities, migrants and social movements From the 1960s onwards she photographed minority groups, social issues, anti-racism campaigns and political actions in the Netherlands. Subjects include migrant workers, Moroccan and Turkish women, Moluccan youth, Roma and Sinti, refugees, the women's movement, the peace movement and squatters. One example is the peace demonstration against cruise missiles in The Hague on 29 October 1983, the biggest demonstration ever held in the Netherlands. ### "De Jongeren" (The Young People) for the Rijksmuseum (1983-1985) In 1983 the Dutch History department of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam commissioned Maya Pejić and Han Singels to photograph young people in the Netherlands. For two years they visited pop concerts, youth festivals, discos, schools and squats across the country, from Pinkpop to Leeuwarden and Valkenburg. The result was the exhibition "De Jongeren" at the Rijksmuseum in the summer of 1985, and the book "De jongeren" (Fragment, Amsterdam, 1985). The Rijksmuseum bought her photographs in 1985. About this work she said that young people often looked cheerful into the lens, but that there was often a lot of misery behind such a picture. ### Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Maya Pejić is listed as a maker in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, with a work from 1980. Her Amsterdam commissions are included in "Foto's voor de stad" (Photos for the City: Amsterdam documentary photo commissions 1972-1991), published by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1992. Her archive also holds her own photographs taken in and around the Stedelijk Museum. ### Archive and legacy Her full archive went to the International Institute of Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam. It holds more than 220,000 negatives, slides and prints, plus her work papers, CVs, interviews, correspondence and travel notebooks. The IISG holds the copyright of all her photographs. In 2019 the IISG presented her work in its series "The IISH collection in images". ## Exhibitions - 1976: "Thuis is ver weg" (Home Is Far Away), Museum voor Land- en Volkenkunde (Rotterdam) - 1983: "Foto's voor de stad" (Photos for the City), Amsterdam documentary photo commissions 1981-1982, Amsterdams Historisch Museum (group exhibition) - 1985: "De Jongeren" (The Young People), photographs by Maya Pejić and Han Singels, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam - 2022: "Faces of Valkenburg", Museum Valkenburg (group exhibition, includes her photograph from the "De Jongeren" series) ## Publications (selection) - De bevalling.
